Is it safe to bake on a cooling rack?
Hi all,
So I'm making some jalapeno poppers, and I'm wanting to keep them above the puddle of bacon grease that inevitably forms. I thought that I could set a cooling rack in a large, deep cooking sheet. I have three cooling racks for some reason (all wedding gifts), but they all have some sort of black coating (not stainless steel).
Can these be heated (say to 375) safely?

Not that kind no. I have those and they are not oven safe. You would need stainless steel.

In my teen years ive made a make shift broiling pan with rolled up tightly crumpled tin foil... Lol it got the job done if worse comes to worse you could try that

Teen years? I just did that last night!

Going on this, you can poke holes in the foil for the oil from the bacon to drip through onto a pan.

What recipe are you using for jalapeno poppers? I've never had any with bacon, so it was never a problem.

The only way mine could be any unhealthier is if they were deep-fried...
Decapitate, half and devein peppers. Fill with cream cheese. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Wrap with half a slice of bacon each (thin-sliced works best).

Thank you much for asking this question... I cannot believe I had not thought of this factor... I just made pork loin for the 3rd time on one that is not stainless steel. YIKES... I surely will not be doing that anymore!!! Thank you for the answers too :)

Scrub the oven racks, put the poppers directly on there, with a pan below to catch the drippings.

This may work- I've only had those grilled on an outdoor grill, so no drops to worry about.

This is how I roast things that I don't want sitting in a pan

The stainless steel ones without the coating are, with coating ... no.
I use a cooling rack that fits in a cookie sheet to cook bacon. Some aluminium foil below to catch all the grease for easy clean up, and in the oven for 30 mins at 400 degrees. Perfect bacon with next to no clean up.

Get a cake pan, layer tinfoil on the bottom and over it. Poke holes in tin foil and create a slight dip in the middle. The grease will drip into the pan and get caught by the base lining of tin foil.
Could work until you get a better set up going.

That black coating would probably melt in the oven! Maybe you could put them on a cleaned oven rack and place a baking sheet with a rim under it to catch the drippings? Hope your jalapeno poppers turn out well!

Funny icatually just had to go through this. I was going to bake some chicken but it reccomended baking on a rack. so I went to buy one. I found those cheap cooling racks with the black coating. i scoured the packaging but none would say yes or no for baking.
I ended up buy a Calphalon rack that on the package said it was safe up to 450. the rack is not stainless steel, it's non stick coated but oven safe.
Personally I wouldn't trust the cheap black ones to be oven safe.

I have a black coated cooling rack. It is some kind of oxide coating, perfectly safe. If you aren't sure just put it in a 400F oven, if the coating softens don't use it hot.
