Transition Instructions
Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |
Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?
We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.
How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Great and not so great!
By Mctk4mom on Oct 20, 2021
Chewy is outstanding. Stand behind products and packaging!! In a box and paper packing!!! Just ordered prescription meds all must be taken lifelong one of the meds (Benazepril a heart med) has to be divided into quarters and the pill is tiny. Pharmacy tech knew right away that they were incredibly small. Advised me to purchase at my vet or pharmacy return what I received from Chewy and I would be reimbursed. ? How about if you are going to exclusively provide and sell to animals the product coincides with the application. What pharmacist would send a medication that was too small to be divided into quarters knowing the near impossible chances it could be done?! It took me over an hour Chewy is outstanding. Chimpy's MoM
By Khiacat on Oct 29, 2021
This is a food that has been prescribed for my kitty to be well. He does like it and that is a definite plus as I have to watch his glucose level. I now give this to all 4 of my fur-babies which I have noticed they keep in down and have no stomach upset. Glad I found something healthy that is also something everyone loves to eat.

Thankful you could ship
By Tracie on Oct 8, 2021
I have two cats that eat this food and they seem to really enjoy it. I ordered a bag from my veterinarian on September 14th and I still have not received it (today is October 8th and it is still on back order). After waiting one week, I ordered from Chewy, and they were able to get my bag to me within a week. I really appreciate their service and hope to get a schedule set up for reordering.

Worth the extra $
By Audrey on Aug 31, 2021
My cat had digestive issues when I first adopted her, and my first veterinarian could not figure out why. We tried diet changes, medications, series of tests, etc. SUPER expensive with no answers. Took her to my family veterinarian, and she recommended I try this. My cat went from weighing 3lbs, 10oz to now weighing 11lbs and having solid bowel movements every single day. Her coat is great, and she hasn't had any issues since I switched her to this food.

Definitely a keeper
By Flinn on Oct 19, 2021
We've tried many dry foods, most of which were rejected for taste by our cats, caused stomach upset, or were cost prohibitive. All my cats love this and I love that it's helping them. A keeper!

Doesn't agree with any of the three cats
By Flycat on May 24, 2021
Just wanted to write in - Have three cats total, and I have one cat with a digestive problem. have been using the I/D for all three for years(easier than trying to feed everyone different). They all did well with that food and seemed to eat it right up! Thought I would try something else as one is a bit older and seems to be a little heavy around the middle. The older cat cannot tolerate it at all, and has upchucked it almost immediately after eating. I tried it once with that result, so went back to I/D and tried it again in another few days. Did this twice with the same results. Neither one of the other two are interested in eating it, so I will give up on it.
